ADRIEN BARRÈRE (1877-1931) [TOUT PARIS A LA REVUE DES FOLIES BERGERE.] 1902.
90 7/8x152 1/4 inches. Wall & Cie., Paris.
Condition B / B-: overpainting, restored losses, repaired tears, creases and abrasions in margins and image. Ten sheets.
This ten-sheet poster is the largest and most spectacular poster ever produced for the Folies-Bergere, or any music hall, for that matter. The image focuses on the social prominence of the Music Hall, grandly displaying the theatre's promenoir, promenade, which was the place to see and be seen in Paris. In vivid flat tones, and with an interesting perspective leading the viewer's eye diagonally across the poster, Barrere captures the extraordinary pre-theatre scene at this legendary Music Hall. Among the prominent dignitaries and stars depicted is "La Belle Otero" at the arm of Arthur Meyer (the press mogul), Louise Balthy in her ermine coat, Henri Rochefort, Brasseur and the unmistakable Prince of Wales (on the far right with the white beard). The other caricatures no doubt represent a star-studded pantheon of Paris's Belle Epoque A-list. This poster has not been seen at auction in over thirty years and has never appeared without lettering. Dictionaire de la Chanson Francaise p. 105, Graphics Design of the World, volume 2, p. 68.
